Mainstreaming Urban Design for Quintessential Contemporary Metamorphosis of Indian Urbanscapes

Co Author : Nagabhoina Tejendra

The term “urbanscape” is synonymous with the urban landscape, which typically refers to the appearance and layout of cities (Oxford). Cities are complex entities with a nexus landscape that houses humans and biodiversity, which interact with each other, along with the other components of the urban setting such as buildings, roads, open recreational spaces, etc. The design of these components, which account for the built and natural environments of the cities, inevitably has a significant impact on the inhabitants.

Indian cities are a unique manifestation of their respective physical and social characteristics. Whether it is Varanasi’s sacred landscape with stunning temples and devotional milieu alongside the holy river; Udaipur’s grandiose palaces, forts, and sophisticated lake system that synergize seamlessly to create scenic panoramas; Delhi’s cornucopia of iconic heritage sites, cultural centers bustling streets beside the lush Aravalli range; or Bhopal’s historical buildings and contemporary art galleries set against a backdrop of manmade lakes and rich verdure, the charm of the existing urbanscapes countrywide that represent our diverse culture is truly conspicuous.
